How Jennifer Garner Keeps Her Skin Youthful.

The glowing actress, 42, talks sunscreen, selfies, and snacking smartly

Good news: Jennifer Garner is just as bubbly and hilarious in person as you’d imagine her to be.

But it’s not just her down-to-earth personality that won us over while interviewing the Dallas Buyers Club actress for her new role as Neutrogena Brand Ambassador. Garner’s genuine commitment to sun safety was enough to make us reapply our daily SPF with a vigor usually reserved for a day at the beach.
“I’m a big believer in finding shade; you don’t want to expose yourself if you don’t have to,” says Garner, adding that to be safe, she starts each day by applying sunscreen. “I use anywhere from SPF 45 to SPF 70,” she says, varying the level of SPF depending on how much time she’s spending outside.
The sun-conscious star and mom of three also revealed to Everyday Health her foolproof tip for looking good in pictures, the insane hour she starts her workout, and the healthy snack her whole family can’t get enough of.
Her ageless beauty practices: “I actually do the things that I should have done all those years [before],” says Garner of how her skin care routine now includes sunscreen every day, moisturizer specifically for nighttime before bed, and eye cream.
And when asked about when she felt the most beautiful, Garner joking replied, “in the dark!” Her real answer? After a workout and with a little cover-up. “I always start my day with a super-early workout at 5:30 a.m. so I can get that done,” says Garner. “And then I just apply a little bit of concealer to cover up what needs to be covered up. If your skin looks even, I swear you don’t need anything else.”
Her minimalist approach to makeup makes the actress a big fan of the makeup-free trend sweeping the nation. “I love it. Are you kidding me? I go makeup free every day unless someone shows up to make me up,” she says.
The healthy snacks her whole family loves: Justin’s Maple Almond Butter is a fan favorite in her household. “I have it on my toast for breakfast every morning,” she says, adding that her kids spread it on crackers as a snack.
She also reaches for yogurt with berries and honey, cheese, or apple slices to satisfy her hunger. As of late, Garner has added vegetable juice to her diet. “The first one doesn’t go down easy but then you kind of start craving it,” she says.
Her best advice for making the most of the summer: Step one, make sure your skin is totally protected. Garner applies her daily SPF and keeps an additional sunscreen spray in the car. “I use it when I need a little boost or if I’ve forgotten to apply for some reason or need to add a little extra to the kids,” she says.

And if you find yourself posing for a poolside selfie, Garner suggests that you flaunt your best features. “My tip for taking a great picture is to find your angle and stick with it!” she says.

Things You Should Never Do to Your Skin

The skin is your largest, most accessible organ, making self-diagnosis and treatment a common occurrence. Here, top dermatologists from around the country share their advice on what not to do when temptation (or Google) calls. Picking and Popping The Derm: Heidi Waldorf, M.D., Director of Laser And Cosmetic Dermatology, Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York City It was Jerry Seinfeld who gave dermatologists the "Pimple Popper M.D." moniker. The truth is, Mr. Seinfeld, we express, drain, and extract, but, we never,  ever  pop. The difference lies in the details of semantics and technique. Squeezing a blemish (often with bacteria-laden fingertips), creates a lot of inflammation in the skin, sometimes leaving behind scars and discoloration. If a zit is too big to bear, try to see your dermatologist for an injection of cortisone, or put on a bit of benzoyl peroxide to bring that baby down. Chronic breakouts should be managed with medical regimen tailored specifically to your ...
